Who it may help
- Adults seeking psychiatric care for the first time who want a thorough start
- People who have had several brief appointments or medication trials without a clear direction
- People with overlapping symptoms, such as low mood, anxiety, poor sleep and trouble concentrating
- Anyone who wants to understand the reasoning behind a diagnosis and treatment plan
What the evaluation covers
The visit is a conversation, supported by questionnaires you complete beforehand. It typically explores:
- Your current concerns and why you are seeking care now
- Symptom history and how it has changed over time
- Psychiatric and medical history, including family history
- Current and previous medications, and how each one went
- Sleep, daily routines, substance use and other lifestyle factors
- How symptoms affect work, relationships and daily life
- Your goals and preferences for treatment
What you leave with
By the end of the evaluation, Dr. Khan shares a working formulation: his understanding of what is going on, the diagnoses he considered, and how confident he is in each. You will discuss treatment options and agree on next steps.
When it helps, and with your permission, he can coordinate with your therapist or primary care clinician.
What a single evaluation can and cannot do
One visit can answer many questions. Some take longer: records from earlier treatment, input from someone who knows you well, or time to see how symptoms respond. The evaluation aims for diagnostic clarity when possible and is honest when it is not yet possible.
No guaranteed outcome. The evaluation does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, prescription or result. The practice does not prescribe controlled substances at this time.
How to prepare
- A list of current and past psychiatric medications, with doses and how long you took them, if you have it
- Names of clinicians you would like included in your care
- Any prior evaluations or records you are willing to share
- A private, quiet place with a stable internet connection, in a state where the practice is seeing patients
