Before you book: about stimulants

The practice does not prescribe controlled substances, including stimulants, at this time. Non-stimulant options can be discussed when appropriate. With your permission, Dr. Khan can share his evaluation with your primary care clinician, who makes an independent decision about any controlled medication.

No evaluation guarantees a diagnosis or a prescription.

Why a careful evaluation matters

ADHD is real and treatable in adults. Its symptoms also overlap with poor sleep, depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use, medical conditions, medication effects and periods of heavy demand. An online checklist cannot tell these apart, and a positive screening score is a reason to look closer rather than a diagnosis.

How the evaluation works

  • Why now. What has changed: a new role, a new family situation, a shift in sleep or habits.
  • Daily functioning. Concrete examples from work, home, finances and relationships.
  • Development. Evidence of symptoms in childhood, and how they have shown up over time, including strategies that may have hidden them.
  • Other explanations. Sleep, mood, anxiety, substances, medical factors and screen habits.
  • Rating scales and records. Used as supporting information, never as the whole answer. Input from someone who has known you a long time can help when it is available.

Some evaluations need two or three visits. You will hear the conclusion, the level of confidence, and the reasoning behind it.
